In alignment with thoughbot’s commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our work, we have added Design best practices from a DEI perspective to our Playbook.
We believe that designing with empathy and equity - from ideation to final implementation - ensures that our work both respects and reflects the diversity of all users and communities. Doing this ultimately contributes to the success of the products we design and build. With this in mind, we have set out to better understand the landscape of inclusive design and compile its best practices into a resource for both ourselves and the wider design community.
Highlights of this resource include:
- Engaging diverse participants in inclusive research methods.
- Developing personas and empathy maps that reflect a broad spectrum of experiences, abilities, and perspectives.
- Designing with accessibility, bias-free visual representation, and cultural sensitivity at the forefront.
- Hosting participatory workshops to ensure designs meet the needs of marginalized groups.
This guide is part of the outcomes of this year’s goal of Bringing DEI to client work where we strive to lead by example, sharing best practices in our community and increasing awareness for equitable practices in hopes it influences others.
We hope Design best practices from a DEI perspective sparks thoughtful discussion and encourages inclusive design practices within your work.
