We're looking for a Managing Director to lead our Boost team.

Boost embeds within existing teams, mentors and upskills developers, eases technical debt, overcomes scaling challenges, and maintains and accelerates momentum with test-driven development and user-focused design. Boost is our largest team with 25 to 30 consultants and is poised for ongoing growth.

As Managing Director, you will be responsible for leading a profitable and sustainable Boost Team, including owning and managing business development and revenue generation for Boost. You’ll work with global thoughtbot leadership to foster Boost team leadership as well as grow, mentor, coach, and support the team.

You'll also foster relationships with complementary partners and grow thoughtbot’s reputation as a leader across the Americas.

The fully remote Boost team is spread across the Americas, covering time zones from UTC-3 to UTC-8.

This is a fully remote position and is open to applicants located anywhere in the Americas. We will begin reviewing applications no sooner than May 27, 2022.


Salary and benefits for this role vary by location. The starting salary for this role in the US is $180,400- $221,400. This position includes annual bonus potential with OTE of 120% base earnings and potential for higher bonus.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

As Managing Director, you will be responsible for:

Leading, coaching, and mentoring the Boost team:

    • Maintain primary responsibility for leading the Boost business
    • Serve as the senior member of the Boost team responsible for product management, business development, practice development, and driving Boost team initiatives
    • Work with the Boost Directors and Team Leads to create a successful Boost team, with a great culture, and high standards in all areas of the team’s work
    • Provide strong consulting and advisory expertise including analytical capabilities and the ability to synthesize content and translate it into sound recommendations and deliverables
    • Support the Boost leadership team through coaching, mentorship, and building on strengths to promote skill enhancement, knowledge sharing, and career development
    • Build a diverse and inclusive team and culture within thoughtbot
    • Attract and retain great teammates
    • Conduct regular one-on-ones and quarterly reviews with team members
  • Ensuring profitability and sustainable growth:
    • Provide input and help define yearly revenue, profitability, and growth targets
    • Maintain and exceed all revenue, profitability, and growth targets
    • Work closely with our CEO, COO/CFO, Boost Directors, and Team Leads to ensure Boost profitability, develop a strategic view of the evolving marketplace, define key attributes of new growth opportunities, and identify potential opportunities and risks to the business
    • Work closely with business leaders across thoughtbot to develop long-term strategies and inform the business sustainability roadmap
    • Capture optimized processes into the agency Handbook
  • Business development and revenue generation:
    • Generate a significant portion of Boost annual revenue
    • Own revenue goals of > $9 million in 2022 with incremental revenue growth goals in the following years
    • Generate and maintain an active new business pipeline
    • Identify, engage, negotiate, and close new non-inbound business development opportunities
    • Own the inbound lead process from intake to close and be the primary business development contact for potential customers of Boost
    • Partner with other thoughtbot teams to drive cross-team solutions
    • Consistently update CRM with most accurate data and maintain pipeline forecasts
    • Present forecasts and pipeline status in monthly growth calls and quarterly updates
    • Gather intelligence on competitor activity and distribute insights to the business development and marketing team
    • Ideate new client program offerings, identify opportunities to test and eventually operationalize
    • Work with the business development and marketing team to attract and retain great clients, and ensure they match the skills and interests of your team
    • Work with business development and marketing team on the development of business development strategies, including prioritization by customers and segments, marketing campaigns, event sponsorships, webinars, videos, blog posts, social media, talk tracks, talking points, sales material, decks assets, and contracts
  • Partnerships and community leadership:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with partner agencies
    • Grow thoughtbot’s reputation as a leader in the community
    • Build and maintain relationships with influencers and leading organizations that support our community.

Your duties and responsibilities will grow and evolve in line with the Boost team’s and the agency’s growth.


As Managing Director, you meet the following qualifications:

  • Proven track record of attracting potential clients and closing technology, consulting, or design deals in the $250K to $5MM range
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting
  • Software development experience, design experience, consulting experience, or experience leading or advocating for a technical team
  • A minimum of five years of supervisory and managerial experience;
  • Leadership skills with experience and seniority to help recruit and train a high-performing team
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-moving environment, adapt to or lead change, work collaboratively with other teams to achieve success, and apply consultative problem-solving skills.

The role prefers but does not require hands-on experience working with GitHub or similar platforms to maintain and update the playbook.
