thoughtbot is looking for an apprentice developer to join our team. Apprenticeship is our position for people early in their career that provides structured support and mentorship to get you to the point where you are promoted to be a billable thoughtbot Developer. It is ideal for intermediate developers looking to build upon their already strong foundation.

Since 2011 we have worked with well over 50 apprentices. Many members of our leadership team started at thoughtbot as apprentices. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice are already working as a developer or designer. You can read more about Apprenticeship at thoughtbot.

thoughtbot is a remote company. This is a fully-remote, full-time position. We're looking for teammates who overlap with our clients' working hours. This position is available to anyone in Europe, the Middle-East, and Africa (UTC-2 through UTC+3).


As a thoughtbot apprentice, you will be paired with a thoughtbot mentor to set goals and grow your skills. You will build upon your existing experience as a developer and strengthen your consulting skills while working alongside your mentor. You will rotate mentors monthly and gain exposure to a variety of client projects. Additionally, you will work on special projects designed to give you additional time and training towards the goals you set with your mentor. This combination of rotations and individual projects enhances the learning process by exposing you to new client projects and new people, while also by allowing you to reapply what you've learned in a new context.

The apprenticeship is a full-time paid position. We expect apprentices to be promoted to the developer role after approximately 3 months.


Salary and benefits vary by location and country. The UK salary range for this role is: £37,500 – £40,950.

We work hard to ensure that we only accept people that we believe will be successful as an apprentice and will be promoted to designer or developer. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice already have a base level technical experience, and in many cases have already held a position working as a developer.

Web developers are promoted from an apprenticeship when they are very comfortable building and shipping Rails & JavaScript applications, while doing fully test-driven development along the way.

We find that well-qualified web developer apprentices will be:

  • A web developer experienced in Rails or similar frameworks, or
  • A less-experienced developer who has built and deployed at least one Rails app and are also practicing test-driven development, or
  • A developer comfortable with Rails, but needing to improve on best-practices like test-driven development or code quality.

Application Timeline

The deadline for consideration for Apprenticeships starting in May 2022 is March 11th, 2022. We will consider all Apprenticeship applications submitted before the deadline in a batch. We have a limited number of positions available and we anticipate that we will get more qualified applicants than available positions. If you are not selected for the positions starting in May 2022, but we think you will be a good fit for the Apprenticeship with us, you will have the option of opting in to be considered for the next positions, which will start in August 2022.

The overall application and selection timeline is as follows:

  • Application deadline: March 11th, 2022. We will not be reviewing applications before that date.
  • All initial interviews completed by March 25th.
  • All second interviews completed by April 8th.
  • Final stage interviews completed by April 29th.
  • Final decisions by May 2nd.

    We pay 100% of expenses when you speak at conferences and 50% of the cost for attendees. We also pay 50% of all expenses for job-related training.

    We work a sustainable pace of 40 hours/week. We have four weeks (24 days in the UK) of vacation time per year, in addition to company holidays and sick days. For new parents, we also have at least 6 weeks paid leave in all locations, as well as the ability to take at least 6 months off.
