Welcome to the July - and first - edition of This Month in Investment Time! 🎉 This series will let the world peek behind the curtains and see what we’re up to during our Investment Time - when we set aside time for investment in ourselves, our company, and our community.
This list isn’t exhaustive. We’re sharing what folks are doing on an opt-in basis.
- Matheus Richard ran the third edition of Ruby DF, a local meetup in Distrito Federal, Brazil. Besides organizing the event, he repeated his amazing Tropical.rb talk: The Fast Lane: Async Rails. The event wasn’t recorded, but you can watch his talk on YouTube. He also helped Rails move forward by reviewing PRs and issues as part of the Rails Issues Team.
- Stefanni Brasil efficiently managed her Investment Time by keeping a log of her activities, which helps her stay accountable and prioritize tasks. In July, she dedicated her Investment Friday to several open-source initiatives, including syncing with thoughtbot open-source maintainers, organizing OS events, collaborating on a RubyConf proposal, updating a pull request to enhance thoughtbot’s Open Source page, and creating an issue for adding security files to the OS repositories.
- Sara Jackson had one investment day in July, during which she worked on improving the Clearance project and started Ethics in AI and Data Science from The Linux Foundation. This free, self-paced course provides broad coverage of ethics in AI and was added to our AI Ethics Guide.
- Neil Carvalho did some experiments with image classification models, trying to create a Bluesky labeler that hides pictures of unwanted political figures he doesn’t want to see. He also started working on an RSpec matcher for description lists. Did you know they’re not limited to one-to-one term-definition pairs?
July was a busy and productive month for our team, filled with meaningful contributions to the community, open-source projects, and personal development. We’re excited to continue sharing our journey with you, so stay tuned for the next edition of This Month in Investment Time! There’s much more to come.
